Saturday/Sunday 6th/7th August - Liya relaxes on a BA Airbus A340 somewhere over Siberia. Early Morning Sunday 7th August - aerial view of the Kapshagai Reservoir in Kazakhstan. Early Morning Sunday 7th August - our first view this year of the mountain overlooking Almaty (Zailiyskkiy Alataui Range). Early Morning Sunday 7th August - on the ground at Almaty Airport. In the background the mountains whilst on the right is the old Terminal that Mark went through back in 2000.
Since 2000 they have built a new Terminal just visible in the background here behind liya. We were picked up by Natasha's partner Alexander from the Airport. The view through of the arch that welcomes us to Almaty, Kazakhstan. Note the BMW X5 and the cracked windscreen. Liya in front of just one small part of the 'Glory' War Memorial off Gogol Street. This is still Sunday 7th August. Tributes to Kazakh heroes of the Soviet Union from the Great Patriotic War in the Park.
Liya and Alexander wander down the path lined by rows of the same monuments as pictured left. Liya in front of the Glory Memorial proper. The eternal flame. The Glory Memorial.
Liya and Alexander. Mark and Liya at the War Memorial. Picture taken form the same sport but looking away from the Memorial. This building houses the War Museum and offices. Further views of the War Memorial.
A more recent addition is this memorial to the fallen of the 1980's War in Afghanistan. How much longer before we have these in every Town in the USA or Britain? The Russian Orthodox Chruch Cathedral in the same Park ast the Glory Memorial. One of two naval guns housed in the same park (Kazakhstan is landlocked apart from the Caspian). One of many Wedding Parties to be seen in the Park most days.
A view of the Cathedral from the rear. Later the same day in the Republic Square. Alexander and Liya at Republic Square. The Mountains and the TV Transmitter behind. Further views of the Mountains from Republic Square.
The Presedential Palace seen from Republic Square. Liya and Mark in the same place. Republich Square facing the other way. We queue to make a wish at the base of the column. Another view from Republic Square.
Up the hill from the Republic Square is this Fountain. Sunday Night 7th August - Helen and Liya meet up at the Ust-Kamenogorsk Airport. Helen and her husband Sergey picked us up and took us to the Aparment we had rented for the two weeks. Please DO click on this thumbnail. The Thumbnail is a bit fuzzy but the full picture of much clearer. This is the view from the balcony of our apartment. It shows the Bus Depot on the right. This panoramic view was taken on the first Monday in Ust-Kamenogorsk. Monday lunchtime 8th August - this is the apartment block where our flat was. Luxury it was not. We had both the water and the electric cut off at different times.
A view of the Apartment blocks opposite our own. Note the graffiti including "Limp Bizkit". A second view of the same apartment building with the old truck parked outside. Later on Monday 8th August - Mark and Liya catch the Tram to go see Father. The fare is 20 Tenge per person per trip. Later on Monday - Liya and her Dad at his house.
A view of Father's Garden. A similar view taking in more of the rear Garden. Note the Chimney's rising at the back. The side of Father's House. Tomotoes in bowls outside.
