What is BASE?

BASE is "Business and a Sustainable Environment" an organisation supported by a wide range of Companies in the UK including Oracle. Primarily BASE 2008 is a business-to-business conference but will be so much more. BASE is about linking Profit to Sustainability. As they say "The Sustainable revolution is at a critical phase. Businesses want to be sustainable. Yet businesses have to make money. BASE will show them how." The idea is to form a catalyst around which best practice can be built. To find out more phone +44 (0)20 3170 6040 or go to their web site at www.base08.com.

Sustainable Supply Chain Solutions

According to BASE the Business Opportunity in building sustainable Supply Chains is £150 billion (GBP) annually. That is what it will cost Businesses every year to convert their supply chains to sustainable solutions. Like previous Market pressures such as the Internet, Regulation or Quality Standards, these changes are not optional. Those who do not participate will be out of Business. We are now being encouraged to take practical measures to introduce low carbon products and services whilst improving the energy efficiency of operations. These pressures will become less and less voluntary as Consumers express their preferences at the tills, electorates make their choices at the ballot box and politicians pass the rules and regulations that enforce the change.

BASE Chairman Tom Burke said that there was little coherence in the approaches adopted by different public authorities and "the business environment has been subject to diverse and sometimes conflicting policy currents on these issues until now." BASE research suggested that Businesses were in a state of information overload on climate change. Whilst Business was being implored to make moral choices the Business Opportunity of 'Business Greening' had not been communicated. Essentially the early adopters will be early winners. It is a well kept secret.

BASE adviser Charles Secrett says that the UK needs a "Business-to-Business accelerator for sustainable development". He goes on to say that BASE will "bring together innovators, investors, and decision-makers in the business and public sectors and help make sustainability enterprises more profitable..."

The Event

The first BASE Conference and Exhibition will be at the ExCel on the 15th to 16th October 2008. However, BASE has an existence beyond the October event. Their aim is to move the debate on about sustainable development and business profitability. All organisations need practical information and resources if they are to move on to this next phase of business. The exhibition is a chance to meet like-minded entrepreneurs in this opening market. Climate change and Peak Oil will effect everyone so their advisory board and founding partners are drawn from all areas of public and private sectors. BASE is not a trade body but it aims to speak for all. The global shift to a post-carbon economy is a business imperative and not an option. As a contribution BASE also publishes Newsletters, Magazines and Studies. The Conference program will be available soon.

BASE Publications include:
